Northwest Tarrant ProgressivesMinutes: General Meeting, Wednesday, August 20, 2025

Call to Order: The meeting was called to order by the club president, Sally Craig, at

7:00 pm, with 23 members and guests present.

Minutes: The minutes of the July 2025 meeting, submitted by Karen Horgan, Secretary, and

emailed to the members, were approved as filed.

Financial Report: The financial report, showing a cash balance of $2976.71 was presented by

Treasurer, Richard Layne, and was approved as read.

Agenda Items:

Taylor Rehmet, Candidate for State Senate District 9 Special Election Nov-2025

Taylor is a Texas native, military veteran, and union leader (President of local and state

machinists).

Platform focuses on:

Full funding for public schools.

Improved veteran health care and mental health access.

Expansion of vocational pathways and union apprenticeships.

Support for union education and workplace agency in schools.

Special election for State Senate District 9 is the only race on the ballot for Nov-2025.

Next campaign event: Sunday at 7-7 States District Union Hall (Clifford).

Kenneth Morgan-Aguilera, Candidate US Congressional District 12 Nov-2026

Kenneth Morgan-Aguilera is a non-profit healthcare leader, a former public sector administrator

and advocate for underserved communities.

Platform includes:

Opposition to school vouchers and privatization.

Expansion and protection of Social Security and Medicare; advocacy for free healthcare.

Medicaid expansion, especially for children and underserved populations.

Support for unions, living wages, and affordable housing.

Strong support for reproductive rights and disaster relief accountability.

Plans regular town halls for constituent input.

Judge Sergio De Leon, Incumbent and Candidate for Justice of the Peace Precinct 5

Judge De Leon has served as Justice of the Peace, District 5 since 2012.

He explained the duties of the JP courts which handle small claims, debt, and landlord-tenant

cases, with a focus on eviction due process and landlord accountability.

Precinct 5 uniquely reviews notices to vacate and offers mediation programs, with Legal Aid

support for litigants. He has raised concerns about the elimination of county-wide rental relief.

He is advocating for restoring polling sites, supporting Democratic candidates, especially

anyone running against Tim O’Hare and is worried about what the impact of redistricting will

have on minority representation.

He participates in community outreach which includes Career Day speaking and the Honorary

Jurist Program, engaging youth from 35 schools.

De Leon is collecting signatures for re-election petition; currently he has no known challengers.


Voting Rights & Polling Locations

The Commissioner’s Court has passed a significant reduction in polling sites in Tarrant County

for both Early Voting and Election Day, disproportionately affecting marginalized communities.

Rideshare to Vote identified as a key resource for voter transportation.

Legislative changes have removed requirements for polling site numbers based on population

so the court was able to legally reduce the sites.


Announcements:

Bridge Brigade

Weekly sign-waving initiative every Tuesday morning at Arlington Heights and I-20/Bryant-

Urban bridges.

Open participation; coordinated by Diane.

August Rent Party

Last Friday of the month, 4:30 PM at Tarrant County Democratic Party office.

Fundraising for the party, with a focus on supporting educators.

Donations of teacher supplies encouraged; teachers invited to attend.

Taylor’s Organizing Rally

Sunday, 24th at Union Hall.

Mobilizing volunteers for block walking and phone banking.

Training provided; Texas Majority PAC and state party reps attending.

RSVP goal: 150 attendees; sign-up links to be sent via email.

Saginaw Training Grain Festival

Mill Creek Park, Saginaw; club and candidate booths, voter registration, car show,and raffle.

Volunteers needed for booth staffing; booth fee ~$125.

Voter registration must be separate from candidate activities.

TCDP Labor Day Picnic Our club will be there to support Rodney Lee and Taylor Rehmet.
